This profound prayer given by Guru
Rinpoche can overcome many dreadful circumstances. And many of you know this
great Sampa Lhundrpma prayer as this prayer is usually chanted in schools and
monasteries.
I saw an extract of short verses from
this prayer in social media suggesting to recite for protection of earthquake,
fire and flood
etc. It is to be kindly noted that prayer should not be recited in short verse
or part of it unless it is the concise form. If you are seeking protection you
should have time to recite full version.
The full prayer is to
be recited when:
· Terrifying armies of oppression
encircle us,
· Sickness strikes, to destroy the
fragile bodies of sentient beings,
· Diseases plunge us into unbearable
suffering and agony
· Nature turns against us, and
earth’s resources fail;
· Travelling through hidden lands,
forests and deserted places,
· Our way is blocked and we are cut
off by storms, by rain and snow,
· Vicious wild animals menace
us—tigers, leopards, bears and poisonous snakes,
· Obstacles arise in earth, water,
fire and air To threaten these illusory bodies of ours with destruction,
· Travelling on dangerous routes, If
murderous bandits and robbers attack us,
· Faced by killers on all sides, Who
threaten us with lethal weapons,
· This lifespan is exhausted, and we
come to die,
· We are overwhelmed by karma and
circumstance,
· Beings of all six realms are
tormented by immense pain

སྒྱུ་ལུས་གཡར་པོ་ཞིག་པའི་བར་དོ་རུ༔

Once this borrowed and illusory body is destroyed
འཁྲུལ་སྣང་ཉིང་འཁྲུལ་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཉེན་པ་ན༔

nying trul dukngal nyenpa na
In the bardo state when our deluded experiences, and our
further delusions, arise to make us suffer,
ཡིད་གཉིས་ཐེ་ཚོམ་མེད་པར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས༔

tetsom mepar solwa deb
With no trace of doubt or hesitation we pray:
ཨོ་རྒྱན་དུས་གསུམ་མཁྱེན་པའི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཡིས༔

dü sum khyenpé tukjé yi
O Guru Rinpoche, you who know past, present and future,
through your compassion,
འཁྲུལ་སྣང་རང་སར་གྲོལ་བར་ཐེ་ཚོམ་མེད༔
trulnang
rang sar drolwar tetsom mé
You will let all delusion be self-liberated—of this we
have no doubt!
ཨོ་རྒྱན་པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས༔

To the Lotus-born Guru of Orgyen, we pray!
བསམ་པ་ལྷུན་གྱིས་འགྲུབ་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས༔

lhün gyi drubpar jingyi lob
Grant your blessing, so all our wishes be spontaneously
fulfilled!
གཞན་ཡང་ལས་དང་རྐྱེན་གྱི་དབང་གྱུར་ཏེ༔
shyenyang
lé dang kyen gyi wang gyur té
When we are overwhelmed by karma and circumstance,
འཁྲུལ་སྣང་དངོས་པོར་ཞེན་ཅིང་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ན༔
trulnang
ngöpor shyen ching dukngal na
And suffer through grasping at delusion as real,
ཡིད་གཉིས་ཐེ་ཚོམ་མེད་པར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས༔

With no trace of doubt or hesitation we pray:

O Guru Rinpoche, King of Great Bliss,

trulpa tsené shyikpar jé
You will utterly destroy the delusions that bring suffering.

འགྲོ་དྲུག་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ཆེན་པོས་ཉེན་པ་དང་༔

druk dukngal chenpö nyenpa dang
When beings of all six realms are tormented by immense pain,
ཁྱད་པར་བོད་ཀྱི་རྗེ་འབངས་སྡུག་བསྔལ་ན༔
khyepar
bö kyi jebang dukngal na
And especially when our leaders and people are engulfed in
suffering,
དད་གུས་མོས་པའི་གདུང་ཤུགས་དྲག་པོ་ཡིས༔
dé
gü möpé dungshuk drakpo yi
With intense longing and devotion, from the depths of
our hearts,
ཡིད་གཉིས་ཐེ་ཚོམ་མེད་པར་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས༔

With no trace of doubt or hesitation we pray:
ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཐུགས་རྗེས་འཕོ་འགྱུར་མེད་པར་གཟིགས༔

compassion—watch over us!

ཞེས་གསུངས་ནས༔ ལྷ་སྲས་ལ་ཐུགས་བརྩེ་བས་དགོངས་ཏེ་ཡིད་བཞིན་ནོར་བུ་ལྟ་བུའི་མན་ངག་བཅུ་གསུམ་གནང་ངོ་༔ དེ་ནས་ལྷ་སྲས་ཀྱིས་གུས་པས་ཕྱག་དང་བསྐོར་བ་བྱས༔ གུ་རུ་ཨོ་རྒྱན་གྱི་ཡུལ་དུ་ཞལ་གཟིགས་ཉི་ཟེར་ལ་བཅིབས་ནས་བཞུད་དོ༔
So he spoke, and thinking of the prince
with great fondness, he gave him thirteen pith instructions, which are like
wish-fulfilling jewels. The prince then prostrated and circumambulated in
devotion. Gazing towards Orgyen, the Guru departed, riding on a ray of
sunlight.
ལྷ་སྲས་མུ་ཁྲི་བཙན་པོས་ཉོན་མོངས་རང་གྲོལ་གྱི་མན་ངག་དང་༔ ཡིད་བཞིན་ནོར་བུ་ལྟ་བུའི་མན་ངག་ཞལ་ཆེམས་དང་བཅས་པ་མང་ཡུལ་གྱི་བྲག་རིན་ཆེན་སྤུངས་པ་འདྲ་བ་ལ་གཏེར་དུ་སྦས༔ གཏེར་བདག་བསེའི་ལྷ་མོ་བཞི་ལ་བཅོལ་ལོ༔
The prince Mutri Tsenpo concealed the
pith instruction on ‘Self-Liberation of Destructive Emotions’, and the pith
instructions akin to wish-fulfilling jewels, along with Guru Rinpoche’s final
advice, as treasures, in the rock resembling a pile of jewels (Drak Rinchen
Pung Dra) in Mangyul. He entrusted it to the terma custodians, the four sisters
of Séi Lhamo. These were his words:
ནམ་ཞིག་དུས་ཀྱི་མཐའ་མ་ལ༔ ང་ཡི་གདུང་བརྒྱུད་སྡུག་པའི་དུས༔ རི་བོ་བཀྲ་བཟང་ཤར་འདབས་ན༔ ལས་ཅན་སྐྱེས་བུ་བྱུང་བའི་ཚེ༔ དེ་ཚེ་དེ་ཡིས་རྙེད་གྱུར་ནས༔ བདག་གི་གདུང་བརྒྱུད་སྐྱོབ་པར་ཤོག༔ ཅེས་གསུངས་སོ༔ སཱ་མཱངྒ༔
“When the final moment has come, and it
is time for my royal line to suffer, on the eastern slope of Mount Trazang a
being with the karmic destiny will come. Then let him find this, and let my
line be protected!”
ལྷ་སྲས་མུ་ཁྲི་བཙན་པོའི་ཞལ་ནས༔
Prince Mutri Tsenpo said:
གུང་ཐང་རྒྱལ་པོ་ལ་གསུངས་པ་དེ༔ ཉིན་གུང་བྲེལ་བ་སྤོངས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་ཐོབ༔
“Recite the Sampa Lhundrupma, the prayer
given to the king of Gungthang, at midday, during rest.
སྤྱིར་སྡུག་བསྔལ་གྱི་ཉན་དུས་གསོལ་བ་ཐོབ༔
“In general, recite these prayers
whenever you feel threatened by suffering.
བདག་རྒྱལ་པོའི་གདུང་བརྒྱུད་མ་ནོར་ཞིང་༔ ཆོས་ཚུལ་བཞིན་སྤྱོད་པའི་ལས་ཅན་ལ༔ སྤྱིར་སངས་རྒྱས་ཐམས་ཅད་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཆེ༔ སྒོས་གུ་རུའི་བཀའ་དྲིན་བསམ་མི་ཁྱབ༔ བདག་ཆོས་སྐྱོང་རྒྱལ་པོའི་ངག་ལ་ཉོན༔ དུས་རྒྱུན་དུ་མོས་པས་གསོལ་བ་ཐོབ༔
“To me and my unbroken royal line, and to
those with the good fortune of acting according to Dharma, in general, all the
buddhas are extremely kind: in particular, the Guru is inconceivably kind. So
listen to my words, the words of a king who protects the Dharma: pray to the
Guru constantly, and with deep devotion.”
ཅེས་གསུངས་སོ༔ གུང་ཐང་རྒྱལ་པོ་ལ་གསུངས་པའི་གསོལ་འདེབས་བསམ་པ་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་མ་ཞེས་བྱ་བ་འདི་ནི༔ ལྷ་སྲས་མུ་ཁྲི་བཙན་པོས་རུ་ལག་གྲམ་པ་རྒྱང་གི་ལྷ་ཁང་དུ་སྦས་སོ༔ གཏེར་བདག་ལྷ་མོ་དྲེའུ་ཞོན་མ་ལ་བཅོལ་ལོ༔ སཱ་མཱངྒ༔ ཐཱབཱ༔ ས་མ་ཡ༔ རྒྱ་རྒྱ་རྒྱ༔
These were his words. This prayer taught
to the king of Gungthang, called ‘The Spontaneous Fulfilment of Wishes’ was
concealed by Mutri Tsenpo in the temple of Rulak Gyang. The terma custodian to
whom he entrusted it was Lhamo Dréu Shyönma.
ཆུ་ཕོ་འབྲུག་གི་ལོར་རུ་ལག་རྒྱང་གི་ལྷ་ཁང་ནས་སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་བཟང་པོ་གྲགས་པས་གཏེར་ནས་བཏོན་ཏེ། རིག་འཛིན་ཆེན་པོ་རྒོད་ཀྱི་ལྡེམ་འཕྲུ་ཅན་ལ་གཏད། རིག་འཛིན་ཆེན་པོས་ཤོག་སེར་ལས་བསྒྱུར་བའོ། །གཏེར་རྒྱ༔ སྦས་རྒྱ༔ ཟབ་རྒྱ༔ ཨྀ་ཐི༔
In the Male Water Dragon year (1352),
Tulku Zangpo Drakpa took out the terma from the temple of Rulak Gyang, and
entrusted it to the great vidyādhara Rigdzin Chenpo Gödem Truchen (1337-1408),
who deciphered it from the ḍākinī code.
