Who took the photo of Ngadrama, the famous "Same As Me" statue of Guru Rinpoche?


I am sure you all must have seen one way or other this famous Guru Rinpoche’s look a like image.

This great Photo of Guru Rinpoche was taken by HRH Gyalyum Kunzang Dechen Tsomo Namgyal (1902-87), former Queen Mother of Sikkim.

HRH the Queen Mother of Sikkim, Gyalyum Kunzang Dechen Tsomo Namgyal, was gifted with an Agfa camera and, in 1935, while visiting relatives, used this camera to take a photograph of the famous Guru Ngadrama statue at Samye. Unfortunately the statue was later destroyed during the Cultural Revolution.

Had HRH not taken the photo, today we will be deprived off this real image of Guru Rinpoche.

From 1935 to the early 1950s, nobody gave this photograph much thought. It was treasured, and only one or two prints are made without attaching great significance.

Fortunately, in 1955, when Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro came to reside at the Palace Monastery in Gangtok, Sikkim, he saw the photograph, instantly showed great reverence and made  copies and distributed to his favorite students.

The original photo was in black and white, it was later computer enhanced according to the advice of lamas who saw the original statue before it was destroyed during cultural revolution by the Chinese.

Origin of the statue

‘Looks Like Me’ (Guru ngadrama),  this is an image of Padmasambhava which was made from life and blessed by him in the eighth century in Tibet. It is believed that on seeing this statue at Samyé, he remarked, “It looks like me,” and then blessed it, saying, “Now it is the same as me!”

So Guru Rinpoche look exactly like the one seen in the image.

Vajra kāya of indestructible great bliss, union of appearance and emptiness,

མཚན་དཔེའི་ལང་ཚོ་རབ་རྒྱས་རྒྱལ་ཀུན་གྱི། །
Fully blossomed youthful form with all the marks and signs,

ངོ་མཚར་སྤྱི་གཟུགས་གང་འདུལ་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ། །
Wonderful embodiment, the nirmāṇakāya who tames everyone,

གྲགས་སྟོང་འགགས་པ་མེད་པ་རྡོ་རྗེའི་གསུང་། །
Vajra speech, the unceasing union of sound and emptiness,

ཡན་ལག་དྲུག་ཅུ་ཟབ་གསང་ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྒྲ། །
The sixty aspects of the melodious sound of the profound and secret Dharma,

འགྲོ་བློའི་བསམ་པ་བཞིན་སྟོན་ལོངས་སྤྱོད་རྫོགས། །
The sambhogakāya who teaches beings according to their needs,

འགག་མེད་གསུང་གི་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཞབས་བརྟན་གསོལ། །

Vajra mind, the union of rigpa and emptiness, without birth, ceasing, or abiding,

The profound clear wisdom expanse from which all phenomena arise,

Rangjung Kharsapani (self created Avalokiteshvara)



                                     

The Kingdom's National Treasure the secret relic ‘Rangjung Kharsapani’ was brought by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel from his monastery at Ralung in Tibet.

Rangjung  means ‘self-created' and Kharsapani means Avalokiteshvara, or Chenrezig in Bhutanese. The self created statue of ‘Rangjung Kharsapani’ (Avalokiteshvara) had appeared miraculously from the vertebra of Tsangpa Gyre, the founder of Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Mahayana buddhism. It was found in the cremated remains of Tsangpa Gyare. This relic statue has one face and two arms with lotus stalks in the left hand and the right hand in a position of protection.

Chenrezig (Avalokiteshvara) is the Bodhisattva of Compassion.  A bodhisattva is an enlightened being who has decided to delay becoming a fully enlightened Buddha and who lives in a compassionate spirit life for the sake of all beings. He has taken vows to save all beings. With a mantra, Om mani padme hum! (Hail the jewel in the lotus), he tirelessly attempts to deliver all beings from suffering. He appears in many different forms to assist suffering beings.

It is widely believed that just having a glimpse or seeing the Rangjung Kharsapani is equivalent of seeing the Avalokiteshwara in real. Buddhist believe that every person whose heart is moved by love and compassion, who deeply and sincerely act for the benefit of others without concern for fame, profit, social position, or recognition expresses the activity of Chenrezig. Love and compassion are the true signs revealing the presence of Chenrezig in him or her.

Compassion is the most important religious practice. For Buddhists, compassion is sensitivity to the sufferings of others and attempt to relieve suffering. It is the realization that we (human beings, animals, and the earth itself) are all interconnected. The Buddha is an example of compassion, for he taught human beings the way to freedom.

If one prays with utmost faith and devotion to Rangjung Kharsapani it is believed to bring forth many merits for oneself and other, and purify all the wrong deeds and dispel of all the bad obscuration we have accumulated in the past lives. It clears away all the malevolent spirits and protects us from outer, inner and the most inner obstacles of this lifetime and brings forth longevity, free of all diseases, good fortune.

Meat eater will face serious consequences after death

It is said in this sutra:

Those whose actions are evil are the ones who will fill the Hell of Great Heat, experiencing therein the fruits of their wickedness.

It is there that they will boil for hundreds of thousands of years because of their willful harm. Their own evil actions have thus become their enemies.

When they gain release, they will flee, searching for a protector, a refuge, or help. But in the distance they will see packs of ravenous hounds, with jaws agape and teeth like sharpened diamonds, which race toward them and encircle them with their terrible baying.

The denizens of hell will try to escape, but the hounds of hell will overtake and devour them whole: sinews and flesh, joint and bone, leaving nothing, not even a fragment the size of a mustard seed! Body and limbs will be completely eaten up. And this experience of being devoured by dogs will occur again and again.

All this is said to be the result of killing living beings for the sake of enjoying their meat.

SO THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU EAT HELL MEAT.

We all have done actions that we now feel badly about doing, and we have aspects of ourselves that we do not like and wish to change. Purification practices are excellent means to remove emotional burdens such as guilt, as well as to pacify the obstacles to our happiness and self-improvement created by the imprints of our destructive actions. Guilt over past actions is useless, only leaving us feeling helpless and hopeless. On the other hand, acting to purify negative imprints and afflictions is very productive. It helps us to change our bad habits and subdues obstacles to long life and success in our spiritual practice.

The first communication between King Indrabuti and Guru Rinpoche



King Indrabhuti asked  five questions to young Guru Rinpoche after Guru Rinpoche emanated from the lotus as a young child.

1. Where do you come from?
2. What is your father's name?
3. What is your mother's name?
4. What do you do?
5. What do you eat?

Guru Rinpoche answered:

1.  I come from the unborn Dharmadhatu.

2.  My father's name is Kuntuzangpo.

3. My mother's name is Kuntuzangmo.
(Kuntuzangpo means, "always good" in Tibetan.

4. I am here to help all sentient beings of the six realms.

5. I eat dualistic conceptions and my words benefit all beings.

Being a Buddhist, King Indrabhuti was very much pleased with these answers.
