Nagas are dominant beings belonging to the animal realm and are considered one of the
Eight Classes of Spirits known as ‘Lu’ in Tibetan. For eight classes of spirits

Nagas
are ruled by Eight Naga Kings and are usually portrayed as serpentine beings,
or as beings with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a serpent.
Lu generally
stays in streams, springs, ponds, rivers, lakes, seas and the oceans. They also
reside in forests and jungles. As these places are their homes, Nagas become
extremely irritated when someone pollutes their environment, cuts trees, does
any form of destructive earthworks for construction activities on their land.
They are also unhappy when people living on their land or near them are
disharmonious and quarrelsome.
Being
extremely clean beings, they also dislike negative actions including the
killing of animals, and the smell of meat sickens them. They also cannot stand
the smell of alcohol or other intoxicants.
If we
have offended these Nagas in any way, they can trouble us. Such signs that the
Nagas are offended includes:
- Dreams of snakes attacking us
- Skin diseases, especially leprosy
- Cancer
- Accidents
- Kidney troubles
- Disharmony within our lives
- In extreme cases, can lead to
possession and even death.
As
powerful beings that can control the weather, they can also cause severe
drought, or floods if they are displeased.
There
are many ways we can appease these beings, including giving them offerings and
reciting certain prayers.
Whenever
there is Luthab please offer the following the Sangchoe to the nagas. Monthly
once will be very good.
This
great sang offering to the nāgas, known as Lasel Chenmo (The Great Spirit Clearing),
was composed by Guru Rinpoche.
༄༅། །ཀླུ་བསངས་བླ་སེལ་ཆེན་མོ་བཞུགས་སོ།

Chenmo: A Sang Offering to the Nāgas

Homage to the master Padmasambhava!
ཀླུ་བསངས་གཏོང་བར་འདོད་པས།
If you wish to make a sang offering to the nāgas, gather the
following:
དང་པོར་རིན་ཆེན་སྣ་ལྔ་ནི།
First, the five precious substances:
གསེར་དངུལ་མུ་ཏིག་བྱུ་རུ་མུ་མེན་ལྔ།
Gold, silver, pearl, coral and lapis lazuli;
འབྲུ་ལྔ་ལ་ནས་འབྲས་གྲོ་སྲན་མ་ཏིལ་བཅས་ལྔ།
Then the five grains: barley, rice, wheat, bean and sesame;
བདུད་རྩི་ལྔ་ལ་སྦྲང་དཀར་འོ་མ་ཞོ་མར་བཅས་ལྔ།
The five nectars: honey, sugar, milk, curd and butter;
སྨན་ལྔ་སླེ་ཏྲེས་ཀཎྜ་ཀ་རི་དབང་ལག་རྒྱ་མཚོའི་ལྦུ་བ་ཤུ་དག་བཅས་ལྔ།
The five medicines: heart-leaved moonseed, blackberry (kaṇḍakāri),
markata, cuttlebone and sweet flag;
དྲི་ལྔ་ལ་ཙནྡན་དཀར་དམར་ཛ་ཏི་ག་བུར་གུར་གུམ་བཅས་ལྔ།
The five fragrances: white sandalwood, red sandalwood, nutmeg,
camphor and saffron;
བཟང་པོ་དྲུག་ལ་ཅུ་གང་གུར་གུམ་ལི་ཤི་ཛ་ཏི་སུག་སྨེལ་ཀ་ཀོ་ལ་དང་དྲུག་དུག་མེད་པའི་ཤིང་སྣ་བསྲེགས།
And the six excellent medicines: bamboo pith, saffron, clove,
nutmeg, small cardamom, and greater cardamom. Also burn wood from various
non-poisonous trees.
(Note: Nowadays you can get readymade Lu Sang in the market,
you can use that. In addition offer a bottle of milk, fresh food mixed with butter
and sugar and small three color flags)
བདག་བསྐྱེད་གང་མོས་གསོལ་བཏབ་ལ་འདི་སྐད་དོ།
Generate
the self-visualization, according to whichever practice you prefer, and then
recite the following:
ཀྱཻ༔ དང་པོ་བསང་བྱུང་གང་ནས་བྱུང༔

When sang first arose from where did it arise?
བསངས་བྱུང་འཛམ་གླིང་དབུས་ནས་བྱུང་༔

It first
arose in the centre of Jambudvīpa,
ནམ་མཁའི་སྨིག་དང་སྨག་ལ་ཆགས༔

Formed
in the haze and darkness of the sky.
ས་ལ་རྩི་ཤིང་སྣ་ཚོགས་འཁྲུངས༔
sa la
tsishing natsok trung
Various
plants appeared upon the earth.
དེ་ལ་འོ་མའི་རྒྱ་མཚོ་བྱུང་༔
dé la
omé gyatso jung
And an
ocean of milk came into being,
དེ་ལ་མེ་ཏོག་མང་པོ་སྐྱེས༔
dé la
metok mangpo kyé
In which
many flowers began to grow,
གསོ་བསྐྱེད་བདུད་རྩིའི་སྨན་ཆར་འབེབས༔
so kyé
dütsi men charbeb
And
showers of nourishing nectar-like medicine rained down.

palace of the five families of great bliss,
