We all know the general physical characteristics of lord Buddha. But there are also Thirty-Two Major and Eighty Minor marks of Buddha which we all should know. By knowing this we can understand that Buddha is PERFECT in all aspects. Considering these aspects, we can also check relate with great masters who do also possesses some of these marks.
The Thirty Two major marks of a buddha (མཚན་བཟང་པོ་སུམ་ཅུ་རྩ་གཉིས) are:
1. On the palms of his hands and the soles of his feet are the designs of a thousand-spoked wheel that protrudes, as if stamped from a mould. (ཕྱག་ཞབས་ཀྱི་མཐིལ་ན་འཁོར་ལོ་རྩིབས་སྟོང་གི་རྣམ་པ་རྒྱ་ལས་རྒྱ་ཡི་འབུར་དོད་པ་ལྟ་བུས་མཚན་པ་དང༌།)
2. The soles of his feet are even and wellset, like the belly of a tortoise. (ཞབས་ཀྱི་མཐིལ་གཉིས་རུས་སྦལ་གྱི་ལྟོ་བ་ལྟར་མཉམ་ཞིང་ལེགས་པར་གནས་པ་དང༌།)
3. The fingers on his hands and the toes on his feet are, like the swan, connected with a web [made of light]. (ཕྱག་ཞབས་ཀྱི་སོར་མོ་ངང་པ་ལྟར་ ་བས་འབྲེལ་བ་དང༌།)
4. His arms and legs are smooth and firm. (ཕྱག་དང་ཞབས་འཇམ་ཞིང་གཞོན་ཤ་ཆགས་པ་དང༌།)
5. The seven parts of his body are rounded — the wrists of his hands and ankles of his feet, the two shoulders and his neck, making seven, are rounded by being full, curved and without indentations. (སྐུ་ཡི་གནས་བདུན་མཐོ་བ་སྟེ། ཕྱག་ཞབས་ཀྱི་རྒྱབ་བཞི་ཕྲག་པ་གཉིས་ལྟག་པ་དང་བདུན་པོ་ཤོང་བུ་མེད་པར་རྒྱས་ཤིང་གང་སྟེ་མཐོ་བ་དང༌།)
6. His fingers and toes are long. (ཕྱག་ཞབས་ཀྱི་སོར་མོ་རིང་བ་དང༌།)
7. These four — the ball and heel of each foot — are prominent and broad. (རྒྱབ་ཀྱི་རྟིང་པ་བཞི་ཆ་ཕྱིར་འཕགས་ཤིང་ཡངས་པ་དང༌།)
8. Taller than the ordinary man, his body is about seven cubits, large and straight, firm like a diamond and endowed with the strength of Vishnu. (ཕལ་པ་ལས་ཁྲུ་བདུན་ཙམ་དུ་སྐུ་ཆེ་ཞིང་དྲང་བ་རྡོ་རྗེ་ལྟར་མཁྲེགས་ལ་སྲེད་མེད་བུའི་སྟོབས་མངའ་བ་དང༌།)
9. No protrusions are visible on his ankles and knees. (ཞབས་ཀྱི་ལོང་བུ་ལྷ་ང་བཅས་པའི་འབུར་མི་མངོན་པ་དང༌།)
10. The hairs on his body grow in an upward direction. (སྐུའི་བ་སྤུ་ཐམས་ཅད་གྱེན་དུ་ཕྱོགས་པར་སྐྱེས་པ་དང༌།)
11. His calves are round, full and beautiful like those of the enaya deer. (བྱིན་པ་རི་དྭགས་ཨེ་ན་ཡ་དང་འདྲ་བར་ཟླུམ་ལ་རྒྱས་ཤིང་མཛེས་པ་དང༌།)
12. His arms are long and beautiful, and when extended they can cover his kneecaps, even without bending his body. (སྐུ་མ་བཏུད་ཀྱང་ཕྱག་བསྐྱང་བ་པུས་མོའི་ལྷ་ངར་སླེབ་པས་ཕྱག་རིང་ཞིང་མཛེས་པ་དང༌། )
13. Like an elephant or a stallion, his genitals i.e., private parts are drawn up within a sheath. (གླང་པོའམ་རྟ་ཅང་ཤེས་ལྟར་འདོམས་ཀྱི་སྦ་བ་སྟེ་གསང་བ་སྦུབས་སུ་ནུབ་པ་དང༌།)
14. His skin is the colour of gold, clear and radiant, and has a beautiful shine. (པགས་པ་གསེར་གྱི་མདོག་ལྟ་བུར་དྭངས་གསལ་སྣུམ་ལ་ཡིད་དུ་འོང་བ་དང་།)
15. His skin is thin and smooth. (པགས་པ་སྲབ་ཅིང་འཇམ་པ་དང༌།)
16. Each hair on his body is fine and smooth, singular and curls to the right. (སྐུའི་བ་སྤུ་ཐམས་ཅད་སྲ་ཞིང་འཇམ་ལ་རེ་རེ་ནས་སྐྱེས་ཏེ་གཡས་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འཁྱིལ་བ་དང༌།)
17. The place between his eyebrows is adorned with a coiled hair that is supple, smooth and white, and which, by nature, has the length of one or three cubits. Coiled clockwise, its size is like the kyurura fruit and it resembles a protrusion of silver. (མཛོད་སྤུ་རང་བཞིན་དུ་ཁྲུ་གང་ངམ་གསུམ་ཙམ་པ་གཡས་སུ་འཁྱིལ་ཞིང་སྐྱུ་རུ་རའི་འབྲས་བུའི་ཚད་ཙམ་དངུལ་གྱི་འབུར་ལྟ་བུས་བརྒྱན་པ་དང༌།)
18. The torso is expansive like a lion. (རོ་སྟོད་སེང་གེ་ལྟར་འཕེལ་ཀ་ཆེ་བ་དང༌།)
19. The top of the two shoulders are round like golden vases. (དཔུང་པ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་མགོ་གསེར་གྱི་བུམ་པ་ལྟར་ཟླུམ་པ་དང༌།)
20. The two palms are round and full without any indentations. (ཐལ་གོང་གཉིས་གཤོང་བུ་མེད་པར་རྒྱས་ཤིང་གང་བ་དང༌།)
21. His tongue has the quality that whatever taste is experienced becomes most delicious. (ལྗགས་ལ་རོ་གང་བླང་བ་རོ་ཞིམ་པའི་མཆོག་ཏུ་འགྱུར་བའི་ཡོན་ཏན་ཡོད་པ་དང༌།)
22. His body, with proportions like the nyagrodha tree, is upright, balanced and beautiful. (སྐུ་ཤིང་ཎྱ་གྲོ་དྷ་ལྟར་ཆུ་ཞེང་གབ་པ་སྟེ་གྱེན་འཕྲེད་ཆ་སྙོམས་པར་མཛེས་པ་དང༌།)
23. The protuberance, which is round, shiny black and coiled clockwise, is not evident to the sight. (ཟླུམ་ཞིང་གནག་ལ་གཡས་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འཁྱིལ་བའི་གཙུག་ཏོར་བལྟར་མི་མངོན་པ་དང༌།)
24. His tongue, which is naturally large enough to cover his whole face, is long and beautiful. (རང་བཞིན་དུ་ཞལ་གྱི་དཀྱིལ་འཁོར་ཁེབ་པ་ཙམ་གྱི་ལྗགས་རིང་ལ་མཛེས་པ་དང༌།)
25. His voice, endowed with the melodiousness of Brahma, has these five aspects of clarity: it is intelligible and brings full comprehension, is worthy of listening to and without unpleasant intonations, has depth and resonance, is generous and pleasant to hear, and is unruffled. Alternatively, these can be subdivided into sixty, or into the sixty aspects of melodious speech. (གསུང་ཚངས་པའི་དབྱངས་ལྟ་བུ་དང་ལྡན་པ་ནི། ཤེས་ཤིང་རྣམ་པར་ཤེས་པར་འགྱུར་བ། མཉན་པར་འོས་ཤིང་མི་མཐུན་པ་མེད་པ། ཟབ་ཅིང་རྗེས་སུ་སྒྲོགས་པ། བཏང་མི་བྲ་ཞིང་རྣ་བར་ཉན་པ། མ་འཁྲུགས་ཤིང་གསལ་བའི་ཡན་ལག་ལྔ་དང་ལྡན་པའམ། དེ་ལས་ཕྱེས་ཏེ་དྲུག་ཅུར་བགྲང་བའམ། ཡང་ན་གསུང་དབྱངས་ཡན་ལག་དྲུག་ཅུ་འོག་ནས་འཆད་འགྱུར་ལྟར་རོ།།)
26. His two cheeks are beautiful, round, full and resemble the surface of a mirror or the jaws of a lion. (འགྲམ་པ་གཉིས་སྡུག་ཅིང་ཟླུམ་ལ་རྒྱས་པ་མེ་ལོང་གི་ངོས་སམ་སེང་གེའི་འགྲམ་པ་འདྲ་བ་དང༌།)
27. All his teeth, including the four incisors, have a very white color. (མཆེ་བ་བཞི་སོགས་ཚེམས་ཐམས་ཅད་མདོག་ཤིན་ཏུ་དཀར་བ་དང༌།)
28. All the teeth are equal in length and width. (ཚེམས་ཐམས་ཅད་མཐོ་དམན་རིང་ཐུང་གི་ཚད་མཉམ་པ་དང༌།)
29. The teeth are evenly set, and are not divided by gaps. (ཚེམས་ལ་བར་མཚམས་མ་བྱེ་བས་ཐག་བཟང་བ་དང༌། )
30. He has the complete number of forty teeth; twenty each above and below. (ཡས་དང་མན་ན་ཉི་ཤུ་རེ་སྟེ་ཚེམས་ཀྱི་གྲངས་བཞི་བཅུ་ཐམ་པ་ཚང་བ་དང༌།)
31. While his eyes, beautiful like sapphire gems, show the primary feature, the particular aspects are these five: the iris in the middle of his eyes is round, shiny black like a bee, and has an extremely black pupil at its center; around them, the white of the eye, to the right and the left, is extremely white; the two corners have a red hue; the color of the center of the eye is bluish at the surface; and in its depth it is yellowish like the color of gold. (སྤྱན་ནི་རིན་པོ་ཆེའི་མཐོན་མཐིང་དང་འདྲ་བར་མཛེས་པ་ཞེས་གཙོ་བོར་སྨྲོས་པ་སྟེ། ནང་གསེས་སུ་དབུས་ཀྱི་སྤྱན་འབྲས་ཟླུམ་པོ་བུང་བ་ལྟར་གནག་པའི་དབུས་ན་རྣོ་མིག་ཤིན་ཏུ་གནག་པ་དང་བཅས་པ། དེའི་རྒྱབ་ཏུ་གཡས་གཡོན་གྱི་སྤྱན་ཚིལ་དཀར་བ། དེའི་་ཟུར་གཉིས་དམར་བའི་བག་དང་ལྡན་པ། སྤྱན་དབུས་ཀྱི་ཁ་སོ་སྔོ་བ། གཏིང་དུ་གསེར་གྱི་མདོག་ལྟར་སེར་བ་ལྔ་ཡོད་དོ།།)
32. His eyelashes are like those of a supreme heifer, chief among cows. The hairs on his upper and lower eyelids are beautifully curved and untangled, like the eyelashes of a cow or calf. (སྤྱན་གྱི་རྫི་མ་བ་མཆོག་སྟེ་བ་ཡི་ཁྱུ་མཆོག་དང་འདྲ་བ་ནི། སྤྱན་གྱི་ཡ་ལྕིབ་མ་ལྕིབ་ཀྱི་སྤུ་རྣམས་ལེགས་པར་གཞོལ་ཞིང་མ་འདྲེས་པ་ཁྱུ་མཆོག་དང་བེའུའི་རྫི་མ་ལྟ་བུ་སྟེ།)
These thirty-two marks make whoever sees them understand: “This is a great being,” and generate admiration. They are therefore known as the marks that signify a great being. (མཚན་སོ་གཉིས་པོ་འདི་དག་གང་གིས་མཐོང་བ་ཙམ་གྱིས་འདི་ནི་སྐྱེས་བུ་ཆེན་པོའོ་ཞེས་ཤེས་ཤིང་དང་བ་སྐྱེད་པར་བྱེད་པས་འདི་དག་སྐྱེས་བུ་ཆེན་པོར་མཚོན་པར་བྱེད་པས་མཚན་ཞེས་བྱའོ།། )
The eighty minor marks of a buddha (དཔེ་བྱེད་བཟང་པོ་བརྒྱད་བཅུ) are:
1. His nails are copper-coloured. (སེན་མོ་ཟངས་ཀྱི་མདོག)
2. His nails are moderately shiny. (སེན་མོ་མདོག་སྣུམ་པ)
3. His nails are raised. (སེན་མོ་མཐོ་བ)
4. His fingers are round. (སོར་མོ་རྣམས་ཟླུམ་པ)
5. His fingers are broad. (སོར་མོ་རྣམས་རྒྱས་པ)
6. His fingers are tapered. (སོར་མོ་རྣམས་བྱིན་གྱིས་ཕྲ་བ)
7. His veins do not protrude. (རྩ་མི་མངོན་པ)
8. His veins are free of knots. (རྩ་མདུད་པ་མེད་པ)
9. His ankles do not protrude. (ལོང་བུ་མི་མངོན་པ)
10. His feet are not uneven. (ཞབསད་མི་མཉམ་པ་མེད་པ)
11. He walks with a lion's gait. (སེང་གེའི་སྟབས་སུ་གཤེགས་པ)
12. He walks with an elephant's gait. (གླང་པོ་ཆེའི་སྟབས་སུ་གཤེགས་པ)
13. He walks with the gait of a goose. (ངང་པའི་སྟབས་སུ་གཤེགས་པ)
14. He walks with a bull's gait. (ཁྱུ་མཆོག་གི་སྟབས་སུ་གཤེགས་པ)
15. His gait tends to the right. (གཡས་མཆོག་སུ་ལྡོག་ཅིང་གཤེགས་པ)
16. His gait is elegant. (མཛེས་པར་གཤེགས་པ)
17. His gait is steady. (མི་གཡོ་བར་གཤེགས་པ)
18. His body is well-covered. (སྐུ་འཁྲིལ་བག་ཆགས་པ)
19. His body looks as if it were polished. (སྐུ་བྱི་དོར་བྱས་པ་ལྟ་བུ)
20. His body is well-proportioned. (སྐུ་རིམ་པར་འཚམས་པ)
21. His body is clean and pure. (སྐུ་གཙང་ཞིང་རྣམ་པར་དག་པ)
22. His body is smooth. (སྐུ་འཇམ་པ)
23. His body is perfect. (སྐུ་རྣམ་པར་དག་པ)
24. His sex organs are fully developed. (མཚན་རྣམ་པར་རྫོགས་པ)
25. His physical bearing is excellent and dignified. (སྐུ་ཁོ་ལག་ཡངས་ཤིང་བཟང་བ)
26. His steps are even. (གོམ་པ་སྙོམས་པ)
27. His eyes are perfect. (སྤྱན་རྣམ་པར་དག་པ)
28. He is youthful. (སྐུ་གཞོན་ཤ་ཅན)
29. His body is not sunken. (སྐུ་ཞུམ་པ་མེད་པ)
30. His body is broad. (སྐུ་ཞ་རྒྱས་པ་ཉིད)
31. His body is not loose. (སྐུ་ཤིན་ཏུ་གྲིམས་པ)
32. His limbs are well-proportioned. (ཡན་ལག་དང་ཉིང་ལག་རྣམ་པར་འབྱེས་པ)
33. His vision is clear and unblurred. (གཟིགས་པ་རབ་མེད་ཅིང་རྣམ་པར་དག་པ)
34. His belly is round. (སྐུ་ཟླུམ་པ)
35. His belly is perfectly moderate. (སྐུ་སྐབས་ཕྱིན་པ)
36. His belly is not long. (སྐུ་མ་རྙོངས་པ)
37. His belly does not bulge. (ཕྱལ་ཕྱང་ངེ་བ་མ་ཡིན་པ)
38. His navel is deep. (ལྟེ་བ་ཟབ་པ)
39. His navel winds to the right. (ལྟེ་བ་གཡས་ཕྱོགས་སུ་འཁྱིལ་བ)
40. He is perfectly handsome. (ཀུན་ནས་མཛེས་པ)
41. His habits are clean. (ཀུན་ཏུ་སྤྱོད་པ་གཙང་བ)
42. His body is free of moles and discolouration. (སྐུ་ལ་རྨི་བ་གནང་བག་མེད་པ)
43. His hands are as soft as cotton wool. (ཕྱག་ཤིང་བལ་ལྟར་འཇམ་པ)
44. The lines of his palms are clear. (ཕྱག་གི་རི་མོ་མདངས་ཡོད་པ)
45. The lines of his palms are deep. (ཕྱག་རི་མོ་ཟབ་པ)
46. The lines of his palms are long. (ཕྱག་གི་རི་མོ་རིང་བ)
47. His face is not overlong. (ཞལ་ཧ་ཅང་མི་རིང་བ)
48. His lips are red like copper. (མཆུ་བིམ་པ་ལྟར་དམར་པ)
49. His tongue is pliant. (ལྗགས་མཉེན་པ)
50. His tongue is thin. (ལྗགས་སྲབ་པ)
51. His tongue is red. (ལྗགས་དམར་བ)
52. His voice is like thunder. (གསུང་འབྲུག་གི་སྒྲ་དང་ལྡན་པ)
53. His voice is sweet and gentle. (གསུང་སྙན་ཅིང་འཇམ་པ)
54. His teeth are round. (མཆེ་བ་ཟླུམ་པ)
55. His teeth are sharp. (མཆེ་བ་རྣོ་བ)
56. His teeth are white. (མཆེ་བ་དཀར་བ)
57. His teeth are even. (མཆེ་བ་མཉམ་པ)
58. His teeth are tapered. (མཆེ་བ་བྱིན་གྱིས་ཕྲ་བ)
59. His nose is prominent. (ཤངས་མཐོ་བ)
60. His nose is clean. (ཤངས་གཙང་བ)
61. His eyes are clear and wide. (སྤྱན་ཡངས་པ)
62. His eyelashes are thick. (རྫི་མ་ལྟུག་པ)
63. The black and white parts of his eyes are well-defined and are like lotus petals. (སྤྱན་་དཀར་ནག་འབྱེས་ཤིང་པད་མའི་འདབ་མ་རངས་པ་ལྟ་བུ)
64. His eyebrows are long. (སྨིན་ཚུགས་རིང་བ)
65. His eyebrows are smooth. (སྨིན་མ་འཇམ་པ)
66. His eyebrows are soft. (སྨིན་མ་སྣུམ་པ)
67. His eyebrows are evenly haired. (སྨིན་མའི་སྤུ་མཉམ་པ)
68. His hands are long and extended. (ཕྱག་རིང་ཞིང་རྒྱས་པ)
69. His ears are of equal size. (སྙན་མཉམ་པ)
70. His ear sense power is perfect. (སྙན་གྱི་དབང་པོ་མ་ཉམས་པ)
71. His forehead is well-formed and well-defined. (དཔྲལ་བ་ལེགས་པར་འབྱེས་པ)
72. His forehead is broad. (དཔྲལ་བ་འབྱེས་ཆེ་བ)
73. His head is very large. (དབུ་ཤིན་ཏུ་རྒྱས་པ)
74. His hair is as black as a bumblebee. (དབུ་སྐྲ་བུང་བ་ལྟར་གནག་པ)
75. His hair is thick. (དབུ་སྐྲ་སྟུག་པ)
76. His hair is soft. (དབུ་སྐྲ་འཇམ་པ)
77. His hair is untangled. (དབུ་སྐྲ་མ་འཛིངས་པ)
78. His hair is not unruly. (དབུ་སྐྲ་མི་གཤོར་བ)
79. His hair is fragrant. (དབུ་སྐྲ་དྲི་ཞིམ་པ)
80. His hands and feet are marked with auspicious emblems such as the glorious endless knot and svastika. (ཕྱག་ཞབས་དཔལ་བེའུ་དང་བཀྲིས་དང་གཡུང་དྲུང་འཁྱིལ་བ)
